The Caribbean Students Association (CSA) is an organization consisting of students, staff and faculty who are of Caribbean origin. The purpose of the club is to make the Embry-Riddle community aware of our West Indian culture. It does so by partaking in events that feature or highlight our West Indian customs, traditions, and beliefs. These events attract Caribbean students from other universities and thus helps to promote Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
The club originated in 1988 when the number of students of Caribbean descent began to increase at the school. The current membership is now at about 75 students, and rising each semester. In 1996, the club held the first "Caribbean Night", a showcase of the islands and nations of the Caribbean. Many countries were represented, displaying their culture to the Embry-Riddle community, and each other. The community got a chance to taste the food of the region, as well as experience their crafts, customs, and literature and learn generally about the region. The event was a huge success, and has thus become an annual event.
The club has also held many parties with Caribbean themes, giving the school a chance to see how West Indians "fete", and to sample the sounds of Reggae, Calypso, Soca, Dancehall and Latin music. These events serve as fundraisers for the club, in addition to other activities such as car washes. Member dues and the sale of club T-shirts also contribute to the CSA's revenue.
Although many of our members are of Caribbean decent, we welcome all individuals that are interested in understanding and/or promoting the future development of our club.
